Naval battle between Greek city-state and Persia in Sept 480 BCE in the straits near Athens. Known as the turning point in the Persian wars.
The Greeks led by the Spartans had 374 ships [50 oared ships]. and the Persian fleet had  1207 ships.
The Persian leader was Xeres and was confident  of victory and set up a throne on the shore  on the slopes of Mt Aegatherus to watch the battle in style and record commanders names who did well.

The Greek leaders argued about where to fight. Themistocles wanted to fight at Salamis.
Eurybiacles threatened to strike  him.
Themistocles sent a fake message to the Persian navy about the Greeks plan to retreat and the Persians fell for the trick and got , trapped in a narrow strait with a large number of ships.and the greeks won the war
